The Health Benefits of Vitamins and Minerals

March 12, 2009

Vitamins and minerals have received a lot of credit over the last few years, but despite what some people say, they are not a magic pill. All the same, it is genuinely tempting to believe that they are. Anything that’s as easy to take as a vitamin supplement that may help hold back the years, look younger, help protect against serious conditions like cancer and heart disease, invigorate your immune system, ward of common colds and viruses, help you work with treating anxiety and supercharge your energy sure enough sounds enticingly miraculous or magical.

A few decades ago, when word started to spread about the restorative potential of nutritional supplements, people who were interested in protecting their health were going crazy for bottled nutrients and were desperate to find out if they were able to be used as part of a liver detox diet regime. As more information became available, so did health consultants and even some medical doctors. As news got around, the rumor was that you could protect yourself against illness just by taking loads of vitamins. Swallow enough vitamin pills to make you rattle, and voila! Perfect health was here to stay.

Well, that bubble burst soon enough. As we very quickly realized, vitamins and minerals, no matter how good they are, can’t cure everything. But they can do a lot. A lot of clinical studies just recently are making interest in the topic heat up all over again. Some of the things that scientists have discovered about the healing power of these vital nutrients will amaze you.

Here’s a brief overview of just one of the many studies on the subject. Researchers in London looked at 180 middle managers employed in the manufacturing industry in Britain. In a rigorous study, half of the participants took a complete health supplement but the other half received a placebo with no nutritional value at all. The test lasted 2 months, at the end, those receiving supplements revealed in tests that they perceived an improvement in their quality of life.

The placebo group reported no significant changes to their wellbeing. The conclusion of the study was that the nutritional supplements seemed to have an impact on improving the employees stress levels, attitudes and general well being. And all of that from taking a complete health supplement each day… with all those clinical trials to confirm their conclusions.

As more clinical trials take place and gather data showing spectacular health benefits from vitamins and minerals, especially when they are included as part of a natural detox diet, we’re right back where we were twenty years ago: keen to make the most of these healing benefits - yet confused by the overwhelming hype and dis-information out there. While the reasons for taking vitamins and minerals are now based on solid science, cutting through the sales hype when buying supplements can be hard work.

Make sure you make contact with your doctor prior to taking health advice coming from non medical sources.
