Acne Scars - Various Treatments

August 16, 2009

In simple terms, an acne scar is the long lasting result of your skin’s trauma it has suffered whilst the inflammation was at it’s peak. Whenever the skin is damaged in any way, blood gets to the area carrying a mixture of our own body’s natural defences. The body’s immediate response is to heal and prevent further issues in the way of infection from bacteria which can attack the wound.

Unfortunately, although our skin does a fantastic job of healing itself, it often does so with little regard to how it appeared in its before the acne struck. Once acne scars have formed, there are several ways of getting rid of them.

The most intense of treatments would certainly be surgical procedures which can be carried out either via plastic surgery, laser therapy or injections of collagen directly into the scar. These methods of course involve difficult procedures, skilled and trained individuals, and in the case of laser therapy in particular, very expensive equipment. Of course the cost of these treatments as a result is considerably more expensive than alternatives.

Simpler methods of acne scar removal include processes such as micro-dermabrasion, micro-needling and silicone sheets. These approaches, can be often provided by beauty professionals and clinics, can be carried out at home successfully, at a much reduced cost. Often these simpler procedures can create as good a final result and usually do not require a period of recovery after treatment.

It is important that before choosing a method of treating acne scarring, that research is done into each of the alternatives so the optimum balance can be made between all of the advantages and disadvantages. It is also worth considering carefully the time it takes to recover, the length of time various treatments take as well as any potential downsides.
